Film synopsis:

Medicare Benefits in the Community explored what people look for when choosing a Medicare plan. Seniors across the country face high copays and limited coverage within their provider networks, and with new 2026 reforms reshaping how plans cover costs, beneficiaries need to understand their plan options.

In addition to an interview with a new Medicare Advantage plan member, Marisa Avello, on her premiums and provider networks. We also addressed the limitations on out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs, so Medicare Advantage plan members like Rufus Orindare, who have chronic conditions, can afford their medications. Medicare expert Damian Hapke, also provides valuable information on the various parts of Medicare for beneficiaries who are new to the program.

This documentary reached out to resources available to medicare seniors in Miami, FL. For example, a SHINE liaison provided Medicare and health insurance information at an American Association of Retired Persons event for seniors at the Betty T. Ferguson Center. Also, a Medicare nutritionist, Jaquelyn Gibson, offered her advice on healthy rewards. Finally, another AARP benefit, Senior Planet, informed Medicare Benefits In The Community about its award-winning technology program. We named the Mini-Doc "Medicare Benefits in the Community" to inform people about resources

that support a more sustainable lifestyle. Medicare Advantage plans include additional benefits that help manage costs, incorporate service utilization tools, and provide access to prescription drug plans. Medicare Advantage programs are being held more accountable for delivering high-quality healthcare and for protecting beneficiaries from high deductibles and copays. Every year, MA plan holders need to review their benefits, and Medicare Benefits In The Community researched important information seniors should review before signing up. Though it was a long process making this documentary, we were able to stay on schedule and complete this Mini-Doc.

  • In order to undertand the value of your piece, we would like to know more about the mind behind the process. How would you define your personal experience with cinema as a director?

Cristopher Avello’s personal experience with cinema as a director began at Miami

Dade College, where he completed eight student films, before earning his Associate in Film Technology. The films depicted dimmed Miami streets, and a series of musical performances at underground clubs in Miami. Thankfully for me, I was able to assist on music video productions, and gain directing experience. From 2012-2014, he swarmed production companies for internships, and targeted directors for assistant camera and other production duties.

  • Your film has a solid and ingenious story,. How did the idea come about?

Before any cameras or wireless mics were turned on, one of the team & producers, Cristopher Avello, shared a few ideas on what the film should be about. At this stage, his colleagues made an informed decision before the class meeting and agreed with his idea for a short documentary titled “Medicare Benefits in the Community” Cristopher Avello had earned his Life & Variable license five years prior, and inherited training on this issue, as well as recognition for his exceptional performance during enrollment seasons. So, when the time came to write the screenplay and seek out resources, his idea took shape through groups like AARP, which agreed to share their access-to-care resources for seniors in the community. And individuals like Rufus and Marisa emerged genuinely, explaining their faith in the Medicare program.

  • Can you tell us any difficulties you had during the filming?

Even though the screenplay was still a work in progress before being green lighted, most of the difficulties came during the editing of the Project. With more than three hundred cuts and files, this Project’s workflow needed to endure a brutal semester.

  • How has your team´s synergy influenced the project´s outcome?

The team’s synergy has influenced an everlasting relationship with the films successful outcome. By forcé of the film industry, we’ve become colleagues for life. Since releasing the project to distributors and festivals, it has received praise on social media and film hubs for some of its accomplishments.

  • We would like to know more about the how and why of this interesting approach for this film. If you had to name three key concepts to help everyone understand and enjoy more this film, what would they be?

First, Improved Access to Care: Medicare significantly increases access to healthcare services for older Americans and those with disabilities, improving overall community health. Second, news resource availability: as producers, we set out to achieve fairness in reporting the truth by applying the concepts of research, pre-production, lighting, editing, and properly bringing the story to life. Lastly, we were able to learn more about these individuals than our audience did, with the aim of suggesting that patients review their Medicare options.

  • How has the process of creating the characters been? And what was the most valuable thing you learned making this movie?

The process started by identifying and reaching out to individuals whose stories or expertise align with the documentary’s topic. This included group members, experts, or people directly affected by the subject matter. The most valuable lesson from making this documentary is the importance of education and accessible resources for seniors navigating Medicare options. The evolving landscape of Medicare, especially with new

reforms, can be confusing. Through interviews and community outreach, I learned that seniors benefit greatly from clear, trustworthy information and support. Connecting with experts and real plan members showed me how critical it is for beneficiaries to review their plans annually and to utilize the many available resources—such as SHINE, nutrition counseling, and technology programs—to make informed healthcare decisions and improve their quality of life.

  • Did the film meet your expectations? Share your thoughts on the production, the competition area, their reach, and how you achieved them!

Yes, of course the film met expectations. Once we each wrapped up our interviews, it was Cristopher Avello who reached and captured other characters, or causes that would guide seniors to better Access for health services.

  • Can you tell us something about your next job?

The boys Will be back at school anxiously waiting to graduate. As for Cristopher Avello, he will be spending 2027 understanding the professional responsibilities that come with a Bachelors in Communication, and searching for Jobs in the sports broadcast world.  As I write this, I have also begun writing a documentary about my path and obstacles on the way to earning my degree from Florida International University.
